Deadly Pedestrian Accidents in Maine
The most grievous injuries and frequent fatalities on our roadways are the result of pedestrian accidents. Ultimately, the human body is unable to withstand the impact of concrete or steel hurled at it, sometimes at a rate exceeding 30 miles per hour. In Maine and other states, pedestrian fatalities are a significant concern due to the increased reliance on motor vehicles as the primary mode of transportation. Annually, 65,000 pedestrians sustain injuries due to collisions, as indicated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Both pedestrians and occupants of passenger vehicles are legally mandated to exercise prudence. However, even the most cautious pedestrian is more susceptible to injury and less visible than the average motorist. Regrettably, pedestrians are not protected from negligent motorists by flashing lights or speed obstacles. Consequently, pedestrians are more likely to be attributed culpability in collisions with motorists.
After being injured or losing a loved one due to the actions of a negligent motorist in a pedestrian collision, it is imperative to consult with a knowledgeable accident attorney.
