Fort Kent, ME (October 5, 2024) – A 65-year-old man from Fort Kent was critically injured on Thursday morning, October 3, after an electric bike crash involving a van on Market Street in Fort Kent.

The man sustained serious injuries and was transported to Northern Maine Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. No updates on his current condition have been provided, however, and it's unclear if citations or charges are pending. The driver reportedly stayed at the scene to cooperate with authorities, though an investigation is ongoing at this time. Maine State Police troopers asked any witnesses to step forward in the meantime.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and his family members at this time.

Bicycle Accidents in Maine

Although bicycling is a fun, healthy, and overall enjoyable activity for adults and children alike, it is possible for accidents to result in severe injuries, such as brain and spinal cord injuries. Each year, over half a million individuals undergo treatment in U.S. emergency rooms for injuries associated with bicycle incidents, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The number of minors who have sustained injuries exceeds fifty percent.

Regrettably, approximately 700 individuals per year succumb to injuries sustained in bicycle crashes in the United States. In the event that individuals sustain injuries in bicycle accidents that were at least partially the result of negligence or the use of a defective product (such as defectively manufactured or designed bicycles or helmets), they have the right to pursue compensation for their medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and related property damage. Compensation may also be available to injured victims or the relatives of individuals who are killed in bicycle accidents through the pursuit of a wrongful death claim.
