Pedestrian Accidents in Maine
Accidents involving pedestrians—those on foot, bicycles, scooters, and other vehicles—lead to the worst injuries and high death tolls on our roads. The force of concrete or steel being hurled toward them, sometimes at over 30 miles per hour, is simply too much for the human body to withstand. Pedestrian accidents are a serious hazard in Maine and other places where there has been an increase in the reliance on motor vehicles as the primary form of transportation.
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that 65,000 pedestrians are injured in crashes each year. Laws requiring caution apply to both pedestrians and drivers of passenger vehicles. Even the most cautious walker, however, is less noticeable and has a higher chance of injury than the typical driver. Sadly, reckless drivers can still harm pedestrians even in the presence of speed bumps or flashing lights. In crashes involving pedestrians, drivers are more likely to be found at fault.
