Skowhegan, ME - Deadly House Fire on Waterville Rd Under Inquiry
Skowhegan, ME (November 1, 2024) – Officials with the Maine Department of Public Safety said Maine State Police troopers say that a person who was severely burned in a fire that destroyed a Skowhegan home has died of their injuries.
The Maine Fire Marshal's Office said the victim of Thursday's, October 31, house fire at 706 Waterville Road died Friday morning at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Investigators said the victim was able to get out of the burning home, but they were critically injured. The victim was first taken to Reddington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan before they were transferred to Maine Medical Center by a LifeFlight helicopter.
The victim's name has not been shared by authorities, who said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will confirm a positive identification after an autopsy and DNA confirmation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time, however, and no further details were released as the inquiry remains ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased victim's family.
Fatal House Fires in Maine
The destructive potential of propane gas can level houses, produce loud, deafening sounds heard from miles away, and ultimately result in serious injuries or even fatalities. Although propane and natural gas are generally secure fuels for residential and commercial heating and other applications, the prevalence of these fuels has increased the number of escapes and explosions in Maine and across the country.
Improper venting, defective gas connectors and control valves, seeping pipelines, cables, and containers, faulty installation, negligent maintenance, and other factors can all contribute to gas and propane explosions. Explosions are also frequently caused by faulty propane canisters, gas meters, and barbecue grills.
